Treating Autoimmune Conditions with Functional Medicine
Autoimmune diseases can feel like your body is working against you, but at Restore Health Center, we see them as a puzzle to be solved. By diving deep into the complexities of your immune system, we uncover the underlying triggers of autoimmunity, offering a path toward balance and wellness. Our functional medicine approach focuses on personalized care that addresses your unique situation, aiming to reduce symptoms, restore function, and improve your quality of life.
Understanding Autoimmune Conditions
Autoimmune conditions occur when the body’s immune system, which normally protects us from infection and disease, mistakenly attacks healthy cells and tissues. This broad category encompasses over 80 different diseases, including type 1 diabetes, rheumatoid arthritis, lupus, and multiple sclerosis, each affecting the body in unique ways. Despite their diversity, autoimmune diseases share a common thread—the immune system’s misdirection, leading to chronic inflammation and tissue damage.
The complexity of autoimmune diseases poses significant challenges for diagnosis and management. They can affect any part of the body, manifesting through a wide range of symptoms that often overlap with other conditions, making them difficult to pinpoint without thorough investigation. Autoimmune diseases can be relentless, fluctuating in intensity with periods of remission and flare-ups, impacting patients’ lives profoundly.
The reasons why the immune system turns against the body’s own cells remain largely a mystery, though genetics, environmental triggers, and lifestyle factors are thought to play critical roles. With autoimmune conditions on the rise globally, understanding these diseases is more important than ever. At Restore Health Center, we’re committed to exploring the depths of each patient’s condition, providing a foundation for personalized and effective care strategies.
This holistic understanding is pivotal in navigating the complex landscape of autoimmune diseases. By acknowledging the uniqueness of each individual’s experience and condition, we lay the groundwork for more targeted and compassionate approaches to care, aiming to enhance the well-being and resilience of those living with autoimmune diseases.
Common Triggers of Autoimmune Conditions
Autoimmune diseases arise from complex interactions between genetics, environmental factors, and lifestyle choices. Elements like infections, stress, and dietary triggers can initiate the immune system’s misguided attack on the body. Discover how personalized care can address these triggers by connecting with us.
Identifying Symptoms of Autoimmunity
Symptoms of autoimmune diseases are as diverse as the conditions themselves, ranging from fatigue and inflammation to more specific issues like joint pain, skin rashes, and organ dysfunction, reflecting the wide impact on the body. Let us help you understand and manage these symptoms with a comprehensive approach.
Standard Approaches to Autoimmune Management
Conventional treatments typically focus on symptom management and immune system suppression. This can include medications such as NSAIDs, corticosteroids, and immunosuppressants, aimed at reducing inflammation and controlling the autoimmune response. "If I can do it at almost 70 years old, so can YOU!"
Where do you turn when you have a physical concern that is medically present? You’ve sought answers, you did all that your medical caregiver has asked of you to do, and yet, still fall short of wellness. THIS WAS MY LIFE!
Having spent 3 years in a local hospital affiliated weight loss program, keeping a food journal that I was told: “Well done, you make great food choices,” yet I continued to gain weight, I still have IBS, and I was still adding more pain to my taxed body. My RA was beyond painful daily, and mobility was so difficult limiting my activities each day. Through all this discouragement I was motivated by words that cut to my core by one of my “specialty” doctors. I have chosen not to validate those words but instead sought out more alternative healthier changes.
I saw on a social media post for TNCIM and signed up immediately for their seminar. Each point that was addressed was exactly what I believed would address my health concerns. More importantly Dr. Taylor would run specific tests for “JUST ME!” Test that I had never done for me before!
I won’t go into what was amiss in my body for myself; But I will say this. My life has changed so much since I began to learn and make positive changes that have been so beneficial. I am MOBILE! Inflammation in my gut and my body have improved. Allergies have been so much better since eliminating what I found out I was allergic to. Also, through exercise (yup a word once foreign to me) I have much improved strength and stamina. The effects of my fibromyalgia are lessened, and I have to say the added benefit of weight loss was a delight!I would like to encourage each of you to reflect on your struggles then get on board and begin the journey to a Better, Healthier YOU! I can also promise the care, concern, encouragement and listening hearts that Dr. Taylor and his staff have will be there supporting you each step of the way. TNCIM have become my friends and my biggest cheerleader. If I can do it at almost 70 years old, so can YOU! #NEVER GIVE UP!”

"Thank you ... for giving me my life back!"
I have been diagnosed with Fibromyalgia. For the past year I have had horrible pain, extreme weakness, nausea and overwhelming fatigue. My mobility was very limited and consequently I had put on much weight. I was pretty much restricted to bed or my recliner. Any activity resulted in shortness of breath. I was lucky to be able to accomplish one task a day. I knew that partnering with TNCIM would be a significant commitment as I live in East Central Indiana. Dr. Taylor was very clear upfront that it would be an 80/20 partnership – they would provide 20% of the treatment, coaching and support but 80% of the work would be on me. I was so miserable with such poor quality of life I felt I really needed to make this commitment. This life was not what I had planned for retirement. They have made the long distant interaction so easy for me with phone conferences, zoom meetings and emails/text messages. I have had to make face-to-face visits only twice. I have completed 11 weeks of my journey for a new life and I can’t believe the difference it has made. I am no longer confined to my bed or recliner. I exercise 3x/week, take my dog for walks at least 5 days a week and feel like I have energy to burn. I even washed my windows inside and out a few days ago. I am doing yard work that I have not been able to do for several years. I am no longer short of breath with activity, not constantly weak and fatigued and all the nausea has gone. In addition I have lost 30 pounds as a side benefit. Seriously, at times the journey has been challenging ( especially the last week of detox) but the support from this team has been phenomenal. I had made up my mind I was going to give this journey my very best effort as I was desperate to feel better. I decided I was no longer going to live to eat but eat to live. I thought about everything I ate and tried some new foods and ways of cooking. I found that many foods I had not tried were actually good and I have enjoyed cooking again. I am getting ready to go on vacation in a few days. Instead of thinking what will I be able to do, I am planning as many adventures as I can get in. I am even planning to do a hike in the mountains. There are no words to explain the difference. Family and friends just can’t believe the difference in me in such a short time. Thank you, Dr. Taylor, Erin, and TNCIM for giving me my life back!!
FAQs about Autoimmune Conditions
How do dietary changes impact autoimmune conditions?
Dietary changes can have a profound impact on autoimmune conditions by reducing inflammation, supporting gut health, and helping regulate the immune system. Eliminating foods that trigger immune responses and incorporating anti-inflammatory foods can significantly alleviate symptoms and may even lead to remission in some cases.
Can lifestyle adjustments really improve autoimmune diseases?
Absolutely. Lifestyle factors, including stress management, sleep quality, and physical activity, play crucial roles in the management of autoimmune diseases. These adjustments can help lower stress hormones, improve immune regulation, and reduce inflammation, contributing to overall health and potentially decreasing disease activity.
What role does gut health play in autoimmune conditions?
The gut is central to the immune system’s function and its dysregulation is linked to the development of autoimmune diseases. A healthy gut microbiome can protect against autoimmune reactions by maintaining immune tolerance, while a compromised gut barrier may allow harmful substances to trigger an immune response, exacerbating autoimmune conditions.
How long does it take to see improvements after starting a functional medicine treatment plan?
The timeline for improvement varies widely and depends on the individual’s specific condition, the severity of symptoms, and how well they adhere to their personalized treatment plan. Some patients may see noticeable improvements within a few weeks, while others may experience gradual changes over months. Patience and consistency are key, as functional medicine aims for long-term healing and wellness as opposed to “quick-fix” bandaid solutions.
Is it possible to reverse autoimmune conditions with functional medicine?
While there is no one-size-fits-all answer, functional medicine focuses on addressing the root causes of autoimmune conditions, which can lead to significant symptom reduction and, in some cases, remission. The goal is to restore balance to the immune system and improve quality of life. Complete reversal depends on many factors, including the specific condition, its progression, and the individual’s overall health.
